CSA Group (CSA) is an independent, not-for-profit membership association dedicated to safety, social good and sustainability. Its knowledge and expertise encompass standards development; training and advisory solutions; global testing and certification services across key business areas including electrical, plumbing and construction, medical, safety and technology, appliances and gas, alternative energy, lighting and sustainability; as well as consumer product evaluation services. The CSA certification mark appears on billions of products worldwide.
Established in 1919 as the Canadian Standards Association, CSA is Canada's first and largest accredited Standards Development Organization (SDO) in Canada and has published over 3000 standards. CSA staff work with over 7,500 expert members to develop standards and codes using a consensus–based approach. While the foundation of CSA's business is consensus-based standards, non-consensus products such as guidelines, handbooks, specifications, toolkits, and education and training materials are also produced. CSA is the only Standards Development Organization in North America accredited by both the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop standards. CSA has a refined and proven methodology for exploring and defining issues and developing solutions.
One of CSA's goals is to facilitate the development of standards, guidelines, educational materials, and other resources in the areas of emergency management, security and protective equipment and systems to meet the needs of stakeholders. Over the past decade alone, CSA has worked with leading Canadian emergency management stakeholders to develop and maintain a number of key standards in this area, including: CSA Z1600 – Emergency Management and Business Continuity Programs; CAN/CGSB/CSA Z1610 – Protection of first responders from chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) events; CAN/CSA Z731, Emergency Preparedness and Response; CSA Z94.4, The Selection, Use and Care of Respirators; CSA Z94.3, Protective Eyewear; CSA Z94.5, Protective Footwear; CSA Z96, High Visibility Apparel; CSA Z611, Riot Helmets and Faceshield Protection; CSA Z617, Blunt-Trauma Protective Equipment, and CSA Z796, Accident Information.
CSA is a member of the American National Standard Institute's (ANSI) Homeland Security Standards Panel (HSSP), whose mission it is to promote, accelerate and coordinate timely development of consensus standards intended to meet the identified homeland security needs in the US. At the international level, CSA is a leading organization in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee 223 on Social Security.
One of CSA’s core competencies is bringing together expertise. The CSA has strong relationships with governments, industry stakeholders, and responder organizations, including the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC), the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP), the RCMP, and the Paramedic Association of Canada. Where the purposes of this document are concerned, the CSA recognizes the requirement to establish a science and technology advisory entity and it is committed to working in partnership with the Centre for Security Science to get the building blocks in place. The CSA will be an ideal partner for leading and coordinating the standards work that such an entity would engage.
